Children’s Museum of Green Bay Breaks Ground On Site of Old H. C. Prange Building

At 10 am on June 25th, 2010 The Children’s Museum of Green Bay celebrates the realization of a dream with an exciting, fun, and celebratory groundbreaking ceremony on the site of the old H. C. Prange building. After 4 years of planning today a collective dream and vision finally comes true. The new children’s museum will begin construction later this summer and be open by March of 2012.

The Children’s Museum of Green Bay – Groundbreaking June 25, 2010

The Groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 10:00 am on the corner of Washington and Pine Street the future site of the 15,000-square-foot children’s museum. The $4.5-million facility will house twelve exhibit and play areas focusing on Northeast Wisconsin. A 2500 traveling exhibit area will open with a interactive play area featuring the Green Bay Packers.

Connecting the City of Green Bay With It’s Waterfront

A small crowd along the Fox River cheered as the Y from the Younkers sign was ripped from the top of the old five-story department store on Thursday morning and a hole was ripped into the building's west wall.

The symbolic gesture was part of the River Center development project, which will feature rental lofts, condominiums, retail space and a children's museum along the river. "This really is the right thing to do, to connect the city of Green Bay with its waterfront," Mayor Jim Schmitt said just moments before the Younkers nameplate tumbled to the ground.

A Big Day for the City of Green Bay

After carefully positioning a group of kids with balloons, and women and men in suits, Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt stepped to a podium Thursday to welcome a new development to the downtown.

As beer trucks and motorcycles roared down Washington Street, Schmitt handed keys to developer John Vetter, whose partnership now owns the former Younkers Department Store property near the corner of Washington and Pine streets. Plans for the site include the Children's Museum of Green Bay, riverfront condos, apartments and a mix of retail and possible office space.
